Enough is Enough!
The massive volume of incessant spam emails and robocalls must stop! As of late 2024, nearly 50% of ALL EMAIL was illegal or unwanted spam, despite the all but worthless CAN-SPAM Act of 2003.
This includes marketing fraud, explicit content, phishing attempts, and delivering malicious viruses. It's a relentless assault on both our time and resources, costing several billion dollars annually in wasted productivity and security measures.
The average email user receives 82 emails per day. That equates to a total of 347 billion emails per day, or roughly 127 trillion emails sent worldwide during 2024.
More than half, or 63 trillion, were unwanted and unsolicited spam – an incredible drain on Internet resources.
Printing these spam messages on standard sheets of paper and placing them in a single stack would create a tower 3.9 million miles tall! The Moon is only 240,000 miles away…
The Human Toll
The average person spends about 3 hours per week managing spam emails, which translates to over 150 hours annually:
Identifying the email as spam
Deciding whether to delete it or mark it as spam
Actually deleting or moving it to the spam folder
Potentially checking if it was mistakenly flagged
Managing virused computers is not included above.
What is the cost to US businesses?
This illustrates the enormous scale and resources squandered to combat spam. It's a daily frustration for countless Americans that needs decisive action now.
This is why we are calling on lawmakers to introduce legislation for the 'Bill of eRights', also known as the CAN'T-SPAM Act.
This new law should make opting in to any marketing list the mandatory default. Furthermore, it should require legitimate opt-in records to expire in one year or less to ensure consent is current and valid.
A key feature of the Bill of eRights should completely eliminate the sale of contact data by data brokers, which is a major driver of unsolicited marketing. The rights of any data broker should not override the rights of American citizens to control their personal data. The history of data breaches alone is enough to warrant the elimination of aggregating contact and other sensitive data in central repositories that serve no useful purpose other than profiting from unwanted mass marketing.
Additionally, third-party marketers who use email or phone communications should be required to obtain a strict federal license, ensuring they operate under rigorous standards.
Finally, we strongly recommend the creation of a simple small claims court process for violations, allowing individuals to seek justice and compensation without needing complex legal representation. For flagrant offenders who do require legal intervention, punishment should involve significant penalties to deter future infractions.
Let's stop the flood of unwanted messages that infringe upon our privacy and waste our valuable time.
Please sign this petition to demand the introduction of the Bill of eRights (also known as the CAN’T-SPAM Act), to protect consumers from the daily scourge of spam once and for all.
